Megapack 3 and Megablock: Tesla's energy business is quietly becoming the main event

While everyone watches robotaxis and FSD builds, Tesla's least glamorous division keeps posting numbers that would be front-page news at any other company. In Q2, Tesla deployed a record 13.5 GWh of energy storage, a figure buried in the same delivery report that announced its best second quarter ever. For scale: that's one quarter of batteries roughly equal to what the entire industry deployed in a year not long ago.
And the pipeline behind it is growing faster than the deployments.
$9 billion in six weeks
The demand signal is hard to overstate. Per Basenor's order-book tracking, Tesla booked roughly $9 billion in Megapack orders across six weeks, totaling about 43 GWh. Utilities aren't sampling the product anymore; they're reserving years of factory output in single purchase orders.
One of the biggest: a June 23 agreement with energy firm NatPower for the first phase of a 25 GWh storage program across Italy and Britain. Grid-scale storage went from pilot projects to national infrastructure procurement in about three years, and Tesla is the vendor those procurements name.
Megapack 3: more energy, same footprint
The product making the next wave possible is Megapack 3, which packs 5 MWh per unit, a 28% jump over Megapack 2, in an identical footprint. Same concrete pad, same trucking logistics, 28% more storage. Production starts late this year at the new Houston Megafactory, purpose-built for an annual capacity of 50 GWh, roughly 10,000 units a year from a single plant.
Then there's Megablock, the idea that shows how Tesla thinks about scale. Instead of shipping batteries and letting each utility engineer its own site, Megablock combines four Megapack 3 units with a transformer and switchgear into one pre-engineered 20 MWh block. Tesla says the approach cuts installation time by 23% and construction costs by up to 40%. It's the same move that made the Superchargers work: don't sell a component, sell the whole solved problem.
The proof of concept charges cars in Sweden
The most delightful data point in Tesla Energy's year comes from Sweden, where a long-running union blockade cut Tesla off from local grid connections. Tesla's answer was a Supercharger station powered entirely by Megapack batteries, running completely off-grid. What started as a workaround is now a template: a charging station that can be dropped anywhere trucks can reach, no utility interconnection queue required.
That template matters at home too. Tesla is preparing its largest Supercharger site yet, a 400-plus stall V4 station, per Teslarati's report on the plans, and battery buffering is what makes stations that size practical without crushing the local grid. The energy division and the charging network are becoming the same machine.
Why owners should care
It's tempting to file Megapacks under "not my car." But Tesla Energy is the reason the rest of the ecosystem keeps compounding. Storage revenue carries the margins that fund the software you actually touch. Buffered Superchargers mean the charging network keeps its reliability crown even as every other brand's cars plug into it. And a grid with terawatt-hours of batteries on it is a grid where charging an EV overnight gets cheaper, not pricier, as adoption grows.
There's also the simple bet-on-the-company angle. Cars are cyclical; infrastructure is compounding. A Tesla that sells storage to utilities on decade-long contracts is a sturdier company than one that only sells cars to consumers, and sturdier is good news for anyone whose daily driver depends on that company's servers, software, and Superchargers. Elon Musk has said for years that Tesla Energy could eventually rival the car business. That line used to sound like founder optimism. At 13.5 GWh a quarter, with a 50 GWh factory coming online and $9 billion booked in six weeks, it now sounds like arithmetic. The energy division doesn't do demo days or viral videos. It just ships product into a market that wants every unit the factories can make.
The cars get the headlines. The batteries are becoming the business.
